Candidates are evaluated on academic achievement, leadership potential, social commitment, and communication skills. In appointing scholars, the selectors will look for distinction of intellect and character as evidenced both by their scholastic attainments and by their other activities and achievements. Preference will be given to candidates who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society. Selectors will also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, including the presentation of a specific and realistic academic program.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a 2009 Marshall Scholarship, candidates must:

be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship);
(by the time they take up their scholarship ie September 2009) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 (or A-) on their undergraduate degree. (Exceptions will be considered only on the specific recommendation of the sponsoring college.
have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2006.
not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University.

Function details: This person will work in the High-Productivity Machines department and will analyze electrical drive motor combinations for varying load profiles of customer machines to optimize the energy efficiency. He/she will define and develop methodologies and (software) tools to offer to the FMTC member companies to help them define optimal drive motor configurations for different machines and applications.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) - Japan Scholarship Programme (JSP) was established in April 1988 with funding from the Government of Japan. It is intended to provide an opportunity to fully qualified citizens of ADB developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related areas to attend academic institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. ADB-JSP enrolls about 300 students annually in 20 academic institutions located in 10 countries within the region.

SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION
The ADB-JSP provides full scholarships for one to two years.

The scholarship is for one year with an extension to the second year of study, as appropriate, which shall be conditional on the scholar maintaining a satisfactory level of performance as determined by the institute. The maximum duration of scholarship award is two years for masters and doctorate programs.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

A national of an ADB borrowing member country (applicants from countries that are no longer borrowing from ADB are not eligible for the ADB-JSP Scholarship).
Gained admission to an approved post graduate course in any of the participating academic institutions. (University of Auckland )
A bachelor`s degree or its equivalent with superior academic record.
At least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience
Proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies.
Not more than 35 years old at the time of application.
In good health.
Should agree to return to his/her home county after completion of studies under the Program.
Staff of participating academic institutions are not eligible for the Scholarship.
Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of ADB, consultants, and relatives of the aforementioned are not eligible for the Scholarship.
Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of the other international organizations are not eligible for the Scholarship.
Applicants living or working in a country other than his/her home country are not eligible for the Scholarship.

Upon completion of their study programs, scholars are expected to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

Monash Graduate Scholarship - MGS

The Monash Graduate Scholarship is available to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and international students. Award holders receive an annual stipend paid fortnightly and may also be eligible for allowances, such as an establishment allowance, a relocation allowance and thesis allowance. Approximately 100 awards are offered annually.

To be eligible for an MGS, applicants must:

hold a bachelors degree with first class honours, or a qualification deemed equivalent, from an Australian or overseas tertiary institution
be undertaking a research masters, PhD or professional doctorate, and
intend to be enrolled as a full-time student upon commencement of the award or, in exceptional circumstances, be granted approval for a part-time award.

Applicants are ineligible for an MGS if they:

have already completed a research masters degree or equivalent, unless:
- intending to undertake a PhD or research professional doctorate, or
- there is a significant change in research direction.
hold a PhD or professional doctorate or equivalent, unless there is a significant change in research direction
have previously held an MGS for more than six months, unless in the case of a PhD or professional doctorate candidate the prior award was for a research masters degree
are currently receiving another equivalent award, scholarship or salary to undertake the research higher degree, providing a benefit greater than 75% of the MGS stipend rate, or

Awarded to the eligible student based on a two-stage selection process consisting of a combination of audition/interview and academic performance.

Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program

Application 2008-2009

The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program provides support to young researchers working in academic and research institutions from developing countries. Fellowships are awarded for a period of five to ten months and must be complete between July 2008 and June 2009. The maximum amount of the grants is US$25,000.

Who can apply?
Only professors and researchers from countries with the right to work in his doctoral thesis can apply the scholarship. Candidates must be under 45 years old, and have completed the course work or any of the examinations required for its doctoral program.

Commitment of fellow

The fellows are required to issue two reports, a report during the period of the fellowship and a final report containing the results of the investigation. The results of the fellows McNamara research work can be considered for publication by the World Bank.

Fellows are expected to return to their home countries and resume their academic or research position after completion of the fellowship. It is also expected to talk about the award of fellowships McNamara any publication relating to their doctoral research work, including their theses, and to provide the program with a copy of his thesis to graduate.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following general criteria to be eligible for a scholarship award:
1. Being national and resident of a member country of the World Bank which is currently eligible to borrow;
2. Candidates must be under 45 years. Candidates born before January 1, 1964 will not be considered;
3. And * Must have completed at least, was awarded a Master’s degree or equivalent, at the time of application;
4. Be enrolled regularly in a doctoral program related to development in their places of origin or in another country;
5. Must have completed all courses and reviewing the needs of its doctoral program;
6. Be employed full-time as a teacher or researcher at an academic institution or research in their country of origin;
Being accepted as a scholar by a university renowned for a period of five to ten months.

The Drug Research Academy at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Copenhagen is pleased to announce that three PhD fellowships will be available from 1 October 2008 to encourage young science graduates to embark on a career in drug research. The purpose of the Drug Research Academy is to train the next generation of drug researchers. Emphasis is on integrated research training to enable researchers to conduct innovative drug research in an interdisciplinary and highly integrated environment. The PhD study program includes obligatory PhD courses with focus on key elements in drug research. The industrial perspective is considered essential and at least three months of research must be carried out in an industrial environment. Applications are invited for the three-year fellowships from candidates that hold or expect to hold a masterÂ´s degree in a field relevant to the following projects:

1. Physiological studies of the calcium sensing receptor using gene knock-down techniques and pharmacological intervention. Supervisors: Professor Hans BrÃ¤uner-Osborne, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Group Leader Markus Latta, LEO Pharma.

Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) are funded by the government of Australia for postgraduate study at Australian Universities. The main goal of ADS is to promote Indonesia’s human resource capacity to contribute to:

* Improving economic management;
* Strengthening democratic institutions and practise;
* Increasing the accessibility and quality of basic social services; and
* Enhancing security and stability.

ADS have played a significant role in Australia’s development cooperation program in Indonesia, with around 10.000 scholarships provided over more than 50 years. ADS continues to be a major component of the program with up to 300 scholarships offered in 2007/2008.

* not hold a scholarship that would give overlapping benefits;
* not have held an Australian Government Scholarship in the 12 months preceding the application;

* be able to take up the scholarship in the year in which it is offered; and
* satisfy the admission requirements of the Australian tertiary institution in which the course is to be undertaken.

Specific Requirements

Scholarship Applicants must:

* be applying for courses that fall within the areas of development priority;
* have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.9 (on a scale of maximum 4.0) and an English language proficiency of at least 5.0 in IELTS (500 in Institutional TOEFL or 170 in International TOEFL). The IELTS or TOEFL result must be current (a test result obtained in 2006 or 2007 will be considered current);
* already hold an undergraduate degree, if applying for a Masters ;
* already have a Masters , if applying for a doctorate ;
* apply for a degree at a level higher than their current highest qualification;
* if applying for doctorate, applicants must be staff of universities, higher education institutions, research institutes, key policy makers and targeted candidates in other agencies associated with AusAID activities. It is highly desirable for doctorate applicants to have a letter of support from Australian university for their proposed field of study;

SEARCA Graduate Scholarship SEARCA invites applications for its graduate scholarship (MS and PhD) in agriculture and related fields (including biological science, social science, economics and statistics, forestry and fisheries, environmental sciences, agro-industrial technology and engineering, and biochemistry) for School Year 2009-2010. The scholarship is open to Southeast Asian natinals,
including Indonesians, who are regular employees of academic or research institutions or government agencies and not older than 35 year old.

Applicants may submit their applications to the Head, Bureau for International Cooperation, Ministry of National Education (MONE) in Jakarta. The MONE then submits the list of applicants accompanied by the complete set of requirements to SEARCA not later than 30 July 2008. Education/Literacy in Thailand

All children have access to free, compulsory education from the age of six to twelve years of age. Almost ninety percent of primary school children attend either public schools or those run by Buddhist monasteries. In 1995-96, there were about six million students enrolled in primary schools. After the primary years, the attendance rates drop to just over fifty percent for secondary education, during the same school year listed above, only 3.8 million children attended lower- or upper-elementary schools.

The Thai government is talking about raising the required six years of education to nine years, although Thailand's literacy rate is one of the highest in Southeast Asia, at almost 95%.

There are many universities to choose from and and over 600,000 students did enroll and attend institutions of higher learning during the early 90s. The largest universities in Thailand are located in Bangkok (Chulalongkorn University, established in 1917) and in the north (Chiang Mai University, established in 1964).

The ministry controls the development and administration of state schools which receive government funding but also has an advisory and supervisory role to private schools. For both private and state schools, there are variations in the extent of autonomy in their curriculum, scope of government aid and funding, tuition burden on the students, and admission policy.^[1]

Children with disabilities attend special education (SPED) schools run by Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs), which are partially funded by the Ministry of Education. Education spending usually makes up about 20 per cent of the annual national budget, which subsidises state education and government-assisted private education for Singaporean citizens and furnishes the Edusave programme, but the costs are significantly higher for non-citizens.

In 2000 the Parliament of Singapore passed the Compulsory Education Act,^[2] which codified compulsory education for children of primary school age, and made it a criminal offence if parents fail to enrol their children in school and ensure their regular attendance.^[3] Exemptions are allowed for homeschooling or full-time religious institutions, but parents must apply for exemption from the Ministry of Education and meet a minimum benchmark.^[4]

In Singapore, the English language is the first language learned by half the children by the time they reach preschool age and becomes the primary medium of instruction by the time they reach primary school. English is the language of instruction for most subjects, especially mathematics and the natural sciences; the official Mother Tongue languages are generally not taught in English, although there is provision for the use of English at the initial stages. Certain schools, such as secondary schools under the Special Assistance Plan (SAP) which encourages a richer use of the mother tongue may teach occasionally in English and another language. There are also other schools which have been experimenting with curricula that integrate language subjects with mathematics and the sciences, using both English and a second language.

Former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew related the idea of English as a common language in Singapore that both connected citizens of all ethnic-cultural backgrounds, so no ethnic group is forced to learn the language of another, and tied Singapore to the world economy.

The education system in Switzerland is very diverse, because the constitution of Switzerland delegates the authority for the school system to the cantons (Article 62). The Swiss constitution sets the foundations, namely that primary school is obligatory for every child and is free in public schools and that the confederation can run or support universities. Swiss people have voted on May 21, 2006 to reform the education system in one common program for all the cantons. Because of its diversity, there are many private international schools in Switzerland that encourage respect for all cultures.

The minimum age for primary school is about six years in all cantons but Obwalden, where it is five years and three months. Any boy or girl can take part in school if they choose to, but kids are separated depending on whether they speak French, German or Italian. Primary school continues until grade four or five, depending on the school.

At the end of primary school (or at the beginning of secondary school), pupils are separated according to their capacities in several (often three) sections. The best students are taught advanced classes to be prepared for further studies and the matura, while students who assimilate a little bit more slowly receive an education more adapted to their needs. In PISA science literacy assessment, 15-year-old students in Switzerland had the 16th highest average score of 57 countries.^[1]

The first university in Switzerland was founded in 1460 in Basel, with a faculty of medicine. This place has a long tradition of chemical and medical research in Switzerland. Other large universities are the ETHZ in Zürich and the EPFL in Lausanne. There are 14 Universities in Switzerland, 10 of which are maintained at cantonal level and usually offer a range of non-technical subjects. Switzerland has the second highest rate of foreign students in tertiary education, after Australia.^[2]

Many Nobel prizes were awarded to Swiss scientists, for example to the world-famous physicist Albert Einstein or more recently to Heinrich Rohrer also in the field of physics. Geneva host the world's largest particle physics laboratory, the CERN. An other important research center is the Paul Scherrer Institute which belongs to the ETHZ.

Education in the United States is provided mainly by government, with control and funding coming from three levels: federal, state, and local. School attendance is mandatory and nearly universal at the elementary and high school levels (often known outside the United States as the primary and secondary levels). At these levels, school curricula, funding, teaching, and other policies are set through locally elected school boards with jurisdiction over school districts. School districts are usually separate from other local jurisdictions, with independent officials and budgets. Educational standards and standardized testing decisions are usually made by state governments.

The ages for compulsory education vary by state, beginning at ages five to eight and ending at the ages of fourteen to eighteen. A growing number of states are now requiring school attendance until the age of 18.

Early childhood

From birth until the age of 5, Indonesian children do not generally have access to formal education. From the age of 5 to 6 or 7, they attend kindergarten (Taman Kanak-kanak). This education is not compulsory for Indonesian citizens, as the aim of this is to prepare them for primary school. The majority of kindergartens are private schools, with more than forty-nine thousand kindergartens, 99.35% of the total kindergartens in Indonesia, privately operated^[1]. The kindergarten years are usually divided into "Class A" and "Class B" students spending a year in each class.

Elementary School

Children ages 7-12 attend Sekolah Dasar (SD) (literally Elementary School). This level of education is compulsory for all Indonesian citizens, based on the national constitution. In contrast to the majority of privately run kindergartens, most elementary schools are government operated public schools, accounting for 93% of all elementary schools in Indonesia^[2]. Similar to education systems in the U.S. and Australia, students must study for six years to complete this level. Some schools offer an accelerated learning program, where students who perform well can finish elementary school in five years.

Middle School

Middle School, generally known by the abbreviation "SMP" (Sekolah Menengah Pertama) is part of primary education in Indonesia. After graduating from elementary school, students attend Middle School for three years from the age of 13-15. After three years of schooling and graduation, students may move on to High School or College, or cease formal education. There are around 22,000 schools in Indonesia with a balanced ownership between public and private sector.

High School

In Indonesia, generally known as by the abberviation "SMA" ("Sekolah Menegah Atas").Based on the national constitution, Indonesian citizens do not have to attend high school as the citizens only require nine years of education. This is also reflected by the number of high schools in Indonesia, with just slightly below 9,000 schools.

We’ve heard of some parents who would rather have their children home-schooled rather than send them to school. This may have its merits – except we’re not sure what they are – but we would worry if the child spent all day with one tutor and misses out on the chance to interact with kids his age.

We believe that education is important in a school setting because that education has to be accompanied by social interaction. The child also needs tools and resources (like a library) that only schools can provide. True, there are problems in schools like bullying, drugs and other distractions, but the education and interaction acquired in a school setting are more enriching than one received at home with a single tutor.

Natural learning environments inspire a burning desire to learn, the key to a productive lifestyle.

What is education, knowledge in basic skills, academics, technical, discipline, citizenship or is it something else? Our society says only academic basics are important and that is based on collecting knowledge without understanding its value. How about the processing of knowledge, using inspiration, visionary ambitions, creativity, risk, ability to bounce back from failure, motivation? Most education institutions don’t consider these skills. These skills are associated with understanding the value of knowledge. There is a huge disconnected gap and this is a problem for high school students in particular.

Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and many other super achievers never finished grade school. They succeeded because they knew how to research, collect information for a selected project and process knowledge. Classroom environment does not work that way, it focuses on the collection of knowledge without a clear purpose, other than high-class grades. If the purpose does not motivate, other than to please the teacher, then there is nothing to process outside of memorizing answers for test. The typical student is academic challenged while being motivation starved. Lack of motivation is lack of knowledge processing skills. The typical college graduate will have a professional skill that supplies life’s basic needs, that’s all.

What is education? The answer is, all elements in the opening paragraph and more, relate to education and all should be considered. This would be ideal and sounds good, but "all" is not possible where performance must be measured. Only what can be measured will be selected and the measuring tool is the written test. Anyone who does not have the ability to put clear thoughts on paper is labeled a failure. All natural skills, including knowledge processing, does not count. The fact is, what is exercised grows stronger, what is ignored stays dormant. The classroom exercises the collection of academics, leaving all other natural skills in the closet.

Test does not measure intelligence or ability, it does not measure how the mind processes information, how motivating experiences develop persistence, or how the mind sorts out instincts, opinions, evaluations, possibilities, alternatives. Knowledge by itself has no value, it is like a dictionary filled with words. Words by themselves have no value, it is the process of stringing them together that gives them value. How they are strung together determines the level of value. Now our education system is becoming a system that memorizes the dictionary. When students have memorized selected knowledge, then they will be given a one-day test, based on dictionary knowledge, which will influence employment opportunity for the rest of their life. Natural skills are not considered. Is this how America became the worlds' economic leader? NO! Knowledge only has value when used with a process and process in an artificial environment is not predictable or measurable.

Achievers in life use inspiration and motivation to overcome barriers. Teaching to the test does not inspire or motivate anyone, memorizing does not inspire a love to learn, in fact, it does just the opposite, it turns off the desire to learn. Education’s goal should be to develop a love to learn that stays with students throughout a lifetime. Education should be a lifetime experience, not limited to the youth years.

Educators are switching to test because there is a crisis in education of their own making and society wants measurable results. This pressure is passed on to political leaders who base political decisions on what is measurable, which is academic test and test are based on acceptance of the status quo. Ever student must now accept the status quo and be an academic intellectual or be labeled a failure. Natural talent and knowledge processing skills does not count. Students receiving the failure label are growing in numbers and percent, all because the system measures selected knowledge on a one day standardized paper test.

Consider the parent who is having a problem with a word processor. On their own, they can’t solve the problem. They have been collecting knowledge for years, but their knowledge processor is in hibernation. With any new gadget, someone has to teach them, they can’t figure it out for themselves. Their thirteen-year-old boy comes to the rescue. He has limited knowledge, but he knows how to processes available information. He explores the word process problem until he finds a solution. He is not unusually smart, this is a teenager’s natural approach to finding solutions.

All young children have a natural talent for creative process of information. It’s during the teen years that natural creative processing is replaced with the status quo. The status quo memorizes knowledge and forgets how to process it. In the classroom, memorizing is what counts. Standardized test reinforces the status quo. It kills creative processing ability. Status quo attitudes will follow them into adult life where they will have to ask their children for help.

Today, the education has a new tool on the market. Behavior control drugs. Any student who refuses to accept the status quo is labeled a troublemaker and will be drugged. The student now behaves in the classroom with glassy eyes and school officials receive high performance ratings. The student may get passing grades and land a job with a comfortable wage, but that will be all. Teenage dreams of great ambitions are gone.

Fact: Self-made millionaires are not "A" students in the classroom. The way they process knowledge is in conflict with classroom priorities. The self-made millionaire has a vision, then he researches specific knowledge, applies intuitive knowledge and process all the elements, searching for a workable solution. Finding alternative ways to do common tasks makes millionaires. The secret is vision, research and processing, not pre stored knowledge.

The typical employer wants employees with dictionary knowledge, not visionaries. They want employees who follow orders, are willing to do repetitive tasks, be happy with a limited role, and accept the status quo. Repetitive tasks' is efficiency and this is where profits are made. Also, the status quo prevents the exposure of blunders by leaders. Too many blunders and profits disappear. In a status quo environment visionaries become bored quickly and soon receive the troublemaker label by offering alternatives or exposing blunders, sometimes leading to dismissal, yet, their ideas increase efficiency and create new sources of profits for the company. In the long haul, visionaries are the one’s who make above average wages no matter what their formal education level. The education system now has the tools to kill off this type of person, behavior control drugs! As these students move into the workforce, status quo and blunders will kill off the typical business.

What can be considered a quality education? A quality education is custom design that addresses the unique abilities of each student and has a positive emotional experience. Custom education evaluates natural talent and how the student learns. This is why home schooled students out perform classroom students. Parents learn what works and does not work, then focus on what works. With this method, students develop a love to learn and learning becomes a lifelong process.
